What Does S.Steel Mean on Jewellery? (And Is It Real Gold?)

Turn a chain, ring or bracelet over and you will often find a tiny stamp: S.Steel, S Steel, SS or Stainless Steel. If you have ever wondered whether that means gold, silver or something cheaper, here is the short answer.

What does S.Steel mean?

S.Steel is short for stainless steel. It tells you the base metal the piece is made from. Jewellers and manufacturers use several versions of the same stamp, including S.Steel, S Steel, S-Steel, St.Steel, SS and Stainless Steel. They all mean the same thing.

Is S.Steel real gold?

No. S.Steel is stainless steel, not a precious metal. If a gold-coloured piece carries the stamp, it is stainless steel with a gold-coloured finish on top. That finish is usually either plating or PVD.

  • Plating is a thin layer applied with electricity. It can wear through with sweat, friction and time.
  • PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) bonds the gold layer to the steel in a vacuum chamber. It is generally harder and more durable than basic plating.

Either way, the piece is not solid gold, and a good seller will say so plainly. You can read how the process works in our guide to 18k gold PVD coating.

Is stainless steel good quality?

The stamp only tells you the metal family, not the grade. Stainless steel comes in many grades, and they are not all equal.

  • 304 is a common, general-purpose grade.
  • 316 contains molybdenum, which improves corrosion resistance.
  • 316L is a low-carbon version of 316 and is widely used for jewellery and watches because it resists corrosion well.

Words like "premium" or "high quality" are marketing terms, not standards. If you want to know what you are buying, look for the grade. All ARMR pieces are made from 316L stainless steel, which is why we say so on every product page. If you are curious about the detail, our article on 316L stainless steel goes through it.

How do other jewellery stamps compare?

Here is a quick guide to the marks you are most likely to see.

  • 925: sterling silver, which is 92.5% pure silver.
  • 750 or 18K: 18 carat solid gold, which is 75% pure gold.
  • GP or plated: a thin gold-coloured layer over another metal.
  • GF: gold filled, which is a thicker layer of gold bonded to a base metal.
  • S.Steel, SS or 316L: stainless steel.

Will S.Steel tarnish or irritate skin?

Stainless steel is designed to resist tarnish, water and sweat, which is why it suits everyday wear better than silver or soft gold. It is also a popular choice for sensitive skin, though everyone is different. If you have a known metal allergy, check with your doctor first. Our guide to what hypoallergenic means explains what the word does and does not promise.

Final word

S.Steel means stainless steel. It is not gold or silver, and the stamp alone says nothing about the grade or the finish. Ask which grade it is and how the colour is applied. If you want pieces made to be worn every day, you can browse our stainless steel jewellery for men.
